FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Chiropractic Safe?

Yes.  You are more likely to die from a lightning strike and painkiller than from a chiropractic care (Vioxx killed 27,785 people from 1999-2003). Statistics prove that chiropractic care is one of the safest types of healthcare in the world. You only need to compare the malpractice insurance premiums paid by chiropractors to those paid by medical doctors. Doctors of Chiropractic pay only a small fraction of the price medical doctors pay in malpractice premiums. Over 780,000 people will die this year (>15,000 deaths per week) as a result of bad medicine or medical errors. (Journal of American Medical Association, 07/26/2000; Death by Medicine 2003).

Our doctors choose a technique that uses gentle percussive instruments to deliver the adjustments or correction, and therefore no popping or cracking sound is created, no twisting involved.

Many doctors might have chosen different techniques, depending on the school they went to and personal preferences. It is wise to have multiple "tools" of healing in one's "toolbag." Our method is just one of many effective tools out there.

Remember, if you are not happy with a plumber or a dentist, you find another one who is highly recommended and experienced. The same thing with finding the right chiropractor for you. If you are not happy with one chiropractor, then find another one! :)  Thankfully there are three awesome chiropractors in our office you can choose from.

How long does it take to get better?

Progress speed varies between people.  It depends on five things:

  1. Severity of your condition,

  2. Age

  3. Level of spinal deterioration / degeneration

  4. Occupation or daily activities

  5. Your commitment and compliance to keep your appointments, to do the things we tell you to do and avoid the things we tell you to avoid.

In general, people who work at places such as manufacturing facilities, construction sites, groceries stores, industrial plants, distilleries, and places where they stand on concrete for hours, bending, lifting, pulling and twisting, will recover slower than folks who work in the office environment with less spinal and joint stress (except prolonged sitting).

Activities such as, video-game slouching, trampoline, waterskiing, watertubing, snowskiing, snowboarding, four-wheeling, poor sleeping posture, knitting, reading for hours, computer use for hours, skateboarding, martial arts, cheerleading, gymnastic, carrying heavy backpacks, (and many more) will REINJURE and slow down your healing / recovery.

In most cases, pain relief can be achieved within one to two weeks. Correction and stabilization of the spine, which gives long lasting results, ranges between three to twelve weeks or longer, depending on those four factors above and (#5) whether you REINJURE your spine by not complying to our recommendations (posture, keeping appointments, home exercises, therapies, etc.).

FOOD FOR THOUGHTS:

Here are some tips to help you understand chiropractic and our care better.

  1. Just because you didn't have a good experience in the past with other chiropractor(s), it doesn't mean chiropractic "doesn't work".  Just like trying to find a good plumber or a dentist, if you are not happy with one, find another one!   We got your back!   LOL.

  2. It takes time to get where you are today.  Problems didn't happen overnight.  Healing is a process, not an event.  Healing takes time.

  3. Stick to your treatment plan, keep your appointments, do your homework. This is teamwork!  If we give 100% to help you, but you barely give 50% of what we asked of you, what do you expect?

  4. Chiropractic is not the treatment of diseases.  Chiropractic detects, finds, and restore nerve irritations or disturbances caused by misalignment of spinal vertebrae, as well as other skeletal joints, and in the process, allowing the nerve signals from the brain to be sent to various body parts, organs, tissues, at 100% without interference, which allows the body to self-heal and self-regulate better, leading to a balanced and vibrant health.

  5. Remember that we don't do the healing.  Your wonderfully designed body does. With each adjustment you receive, we help your body heal better and prevent future problems.   We like to say, "we move the bones, God does the healing."

Easy Labor, Successful VBAC, Constipated Baby

Easy Labor, Successful VBAC, Constipated Baby I received chiropractic care during my pregnancy to prepare for the birth I wanted. I was thrilled to be able to have a successful VBAC with a short labor with no medical intervention. Now, my newborn is seen by Dr. Arthur for trouble with constipation. She has a bowel movement within an hour of every chiropractic visit. We have been thrilled with the care and the benefits associated with routine visits. The best thing is the personal attention and thoughtful education about overall health. ~ Kristin H. Griffie.

Slipped Disc, Trouble Walking

Dr. Arthur has been outstanding to work with.  He is incredibly knowledgeable and very detailed in his work.  I have been to other Chiropractors where it’s “in and out” or “crack and go”.  He I absolutely not that way.  He uses very precise techniques that actually aligns your entire spine. For me personally, I had a slipped disk and thought I was going to need surgery.  I could not work and could hardly walk.  I was in so much pain. I had seen a back cracker and he only made things worse.  Dr. Arthur was recommended as a last minute hope before surgery.  Now, I am recovered and working out again.  I can’t thank him enough for how he has helped me.

I would absolutely recommend Max-Family. ~ Brent Rempe

Spinal Injuries Often Began at Birth

More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even so called 'natural' birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and developing nerve system.  It is very common for newborns to have their tiny fragile neck or head being twisted and yanked at birth, sometimes over and over again.

The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress.

Since significant spinal and cranial trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked right after birth by doctors of chiropractic.  Having a large head and tiny neck with underdeveloped neck muscles makes it very easy for newborns or toddlers to develop spinal misalignments especially when their heads flopped forward or to the side during car trips on car seat, when being held by others, or even during the sitting-crawling-and initial walking stages.

These are the important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.

Daily Childhood Activities Often Cause Undetected Injuries

As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like climbing up the couch, skating or riding a bike and experiences traumas associated with these activities, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur.

If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best.

One of the most common reason parents seek care for their child is trauma from an injury of some sort. These spinal misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults.

We have treated many student athletes, cheerleaders, gymnasts, soccer players, softball players, who have multiple spinal problems due to these high impact, injury-prone sports. The worst part is if these teenagers go through their growth spurt (3-12 inches in a year) but they start out with "crooked" spine and hips or feet that are structurally imbalanced, they will grow up with multiple health problems, from frequent and weak back pain, scoliosis, migraine headaches, scoliosis, upper back hump, and many more.

Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.

Another sought out reason for care is the resolution of a particular symptom or condition. Parents seek care for conditions such as colic, ear infections, asthma, allergies and headaches (to name a few) because they have heard from other parents that chiropractic care can help.

It is important to understand that the doctor of chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function.

Dr. Abraham Towbin, M.D.:

Neuropathologist, Harvard Medical School, Develop, Med., Child Neurol, 1969, II, 54-78

Dr. Towbin performed autopsies on infant cadavers who died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). He pointed out that seven out of eight of these SIDS babies died from spinal injury with neurovascular damage.

Dr. Towbin described various clinical neonatal spinal cord and brain stem injury groups. In the first group, death of the neonate occurs during the course of labor or soon after birth. The second group, is composed of newborns with cord or brainstem damage who survive for days. The third group are infants who survive for long periods, often for years. Under this group, Dr. Towbin describes a subgroup, or the fourth group. "...there must exist a large number of instances with mild injury, with minimal neurologic symptoms, going unnoticed clinically, or being relegated to the category of cerebral palsy."
